An Overview Of A T3 Internet Line

The T3 (also known as DS3) line supports 672 digital data or voice channels being transmitted at 44.736 megabits per second, which is sufficient bandwidth for the transmission of real time full motion video and huge databases on a very busy local area network. T3 Internet enables 672 people to browse the Internet simultaneously at high speeds.

It should be noted that the T carrier is actually a group of channels that has no single channel assigned to any specific telephone. When a channel is used to carry voice signals or digital data, that channel is reserved for that activity temporarily. Once that particular activity is complete, the channel is returned to the group. This means that unless all channels are in use simultaneously, there will always be a free channel.

The normal T3 circuit can only travel about 180 meters between repeater units. Any customer ordering the T3 circuit will normally receive a SONET connection entering the building and connected to a multiplexer contained in a utility enclosure. The circuit is usually delivered in the familiar form of one co-ax cable to send and another co-ax cable to receive, each terminated with BNC connectors.

Typical buyers of a T3 connection are larger size businesses with very high data requirements such as localized Internet Service Providers who use them as the backbone for their broadband services. Other high usage businesses are those supplying support for large VPN, corporate applications and video conferencing facilities. Some software development companies offer the circuits for downloading their products through FTP servers in order to update and apply system patches. The printing industry is an enormous consumer of resources for the transfer of huge graphics files.

With the advent of the Internet, the concept of online E-commerce has taken off, confounding those critics who argued that customers will never buy products before examining them physically. Many of the larger retail companies are turning to T3 circuits in an effort to accommodate larger numbers of customers. With increased coverage and easier access these companies are able to multiply their sales substantially.

While most Internet users may not require the high speed benefits provided by a T3 connection, any business employing a large number of people can enable their employees to use the Internet and talk on the phone simultaneously whilst using the same line. Besides having access to high speed Internet communications, a large bandwidth and reliability, the T3 circuits offer improved security.

A T3 Internet line is not cheap. They have become very popular as a backbone for the Internet companies. The circuits are fairly complex and require specialized hardware and software. Any business that does not require a dedicated T3 line should consider the burstable option which would involve sharing the connection with another company.
